Point Bonita Lighthouse view, sunny day Feb 2024

Visiting the Marin Headlands, Near Sausalito

The other day, my wife and I took a trip up to the Marin Headlands to spend half a day enjoying a beautiful sunny day. But first, we started with breakfast at Fred’s Place on Bridgeway. It was fast and tasty (my wife’s corned beef hash was actually really good. After brunch and a quick 20 minute drive from Sausalito, we parked at the Marine Mammal Center to learn about what the center does, to learn about the local marine mammals (sea lions, seals, otters, whales and dolphins), and to see their current “patients”. It was a great couple of hours! Learn more about the center below and tour times.

Then, we visited the scenic Point Bonita Lighthouse. It’s not always open so check the times on their website. What surprised me was the exhibit in the lighthouse about all of the boats that wrecked outside the Golden Gate before the lighthouse was in place due to hidden rocks, foggy conditions and strong tidal currents. The ranger was hanging around to answer questions or so share information and she gave us a great background on this lighthouse (which was originally built higher up a hill, but was often shrouded in the fog). She also tipped us off that the Harbor Seals were about to give birth and where to spot them (see this shot below).

Lastly, we headed out with the goal of getting a nice view of the Golden Gate Bridge on the way out. It was crowded because it’s a spectacular view, but we found a spot. We filmed a young guy proposing to his future wife (“Yes?”), enjoyed the views and then headed out and were quickly back in Sausalito to enjoy the rest of the day.

Below is a description of the Marin Headlands and some of the top things to do!
